It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Consuelo Suniga Cortez, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, who left us at the age of 95 on March 21, 2025.
Born November 8, 1929, in Martindale, TX, Consuelo was the daughter of Reyes and George Sungia. Tragically, her mother passed away when Consuelo was a child, a loss that shaped her life and gave her a profound understanding of the importance of family. From an early age she knew she wanted to develop a deep, nurturing bond with her own children. Consuelo also stepped in as a caregiver and played a pivotal role in raising her younger siblings.
At 21, Consuelo married Ponciano Cortez Jr., the love of her life and together they raised 7 children. As a homemaker Consuelo dedicated her life to raising their 7 children. Her home was always a place where everyone who walked through the door – whether grandkids or great grandkids – immediately felt welcomed, loved, and wanted. She had a gift for making each person in her family feel special and her legacy will live in the hearts of those who knew her.
Over the years Consuelo’s family grew to include 28 grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren, and 23 great – great grandchildren. Her heart swelled with pride at each new addition, and she cherished every moment spent with her ever-expanding family. She was known for her generous spirit, her unwavering faith, and her ability to bring people together.
Throughout her life, Consuelo taught the importance of family, faith, and love. Her memory will be carried by her children; the late Robert Cortez, David Cortez and wife Sylvia Cortez, the late Silvia Cortez, Susan Cortez and late husband Carlos Medrano, Sandra Cortez and late husband Martin Cortez, Esmeralda and husband Robert Rodriguez, and Ponciano Cortez III “Jr” and wife Maricela, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A service to honor her life will be held at Palmer Mortuary on Friday March 28, 2025, with public viewing starting at 9 am, Rosary at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Catholic Prayer service at 11 a.m. Consuelo will be laid to rest at San Juan Cemetery in Reedville, Texas.
Consuelo’s legacy lives on in the hearts of her family and she will be greatly missed. May she rest in peace.
