Guadalupe Martinez

December 12, 1916 — March 2, 2018

Our dear father, Guadalupe Martinez, died in the late afternoon of March 2, 2018 in Seguin, Guadalupe County, Texas. His life's journey was characterized by love for family, respect for his elders, a disciplined work ethic, and a devotion to Christ and joy in serving in Christ's Holy Church. In the last hours of his life, family members and pastor Rudy Herrera sang a hymn, read a Psalm, and prayed with him at the Nesbit Nursing Home in Seguin.

His parents, Mr. Refugio Martinez and Mrs. Angelita Guajardo Martinez, were sharecroppers in Comal and Guadalupe Counties as he was growing up. He met Dora Morales, also from a family of sharecropper farmers, and they were married in 1938 at Iglesia Metodista La Trinidad in Seguin. They were blessed with four children: Bishop Joel (Raquel), Antonio (Dolores), Juan Manuel (JoAnn), and Amanda Rosas (Jesse). During our mother Dora's struggles with Alzheimer's, he was a constant and caring caregiver until her death in 2009.

He was a devoted member of La Trinidad United Methodist Church for over 60 years. He served as volunteer groundskeeper, in elected positions as a Trustee and as a lay member of the Rio Grande Annual Conference. At his death at age 101, he was the oldest member of the congregation but lived in Corpus Christi with son Juan Manuel and wife JoAnn where he attended El Buen Pastor United Methodist Church.

He worked in civil service at Randolph Air Force Base during World War II and after the war was employed by the natural gas company in Seguin, retiring in 1981.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dora, his son Antonio and wife Dolores, and seven siblings: Sisters: Victoria Amador and Jovita Torres; and brothers: Trinidad, Jesus, Refugio, Gerardo, and Angel. He is survived by his sister, Juanita Martinez.

He was a proud grandfather of 8 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren. He is also survived by several cousins and numerous nieces and nephews.
Our family is grateful for all the pastors at La Trinidad who provided spiritual care and support for our father over the last 60 years. We are also thankful for the love and support of the members of La Trinidad who accompanied him in his faith journey.

The Visitation will be held at Palmer Mortuary Chapel on Thursday, March 8, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. All are encouraged to meet the family for The Funeral Service at La Trinidad United Methodist Church on Friday, March 9, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. The Interment is to follow at the San Geronimo Cemetery.

Gifts in his memory may be made to La Trinidad United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 413, Seguin, Texas 78155.
