Julian "Gene" Manly

January 4, 1946 — July 2, 2021

Julian ”Gene” Clarence Manly was born on January 4, 1946 to Shirley Campbell Manly and Clarence Edward Manly in Cotulla, Texas. He passed away peacefully on July 2, 2021 at his home in Seguin, Texas surrounded by his loving family. He lived a very humble and Christian life. His greatest achievement in life was living by the Golden Rule and sharing the Word of the Lord Jesus Christ. He showed love and kindness to everyone he met. He lived every moment of his life for his family and community. He was so very proud of his family that God made just for him; his wife and angel Maria; children David, Marsha, and Matthew; and grandchildren Nicolas, Brandon, Kaleb, Raygen, Diego, and Alberto.

As a child and young adult, he had a passion for adventure and the outdoors that he carried throughout his life. He loved to rodeo, hunt, fish, camp, go backpacking in Colorado, the game of baseball, volunteer wherever he could, and create wood working projects with his own two hands. He passed on each of these loves to his children who in turn passed them down to his grandchildren. He was a life-long Astros fan and shared this great love of Astros baseball with his daughter.

He graduated from Cotulla High School in 1964 and then graduated college from Sul Ross State University in 1969. He then served in the United States Army from 1969-1971. He worked for Guadalupe Reginal Medical Center (GRMC) as an Operating Room Technician for almost 20 years and then worked for Guadalupe County Jail as a Corrections Officer for 8 years.

He served in many capacities within his community. Throughout the years he was an active member of St James Catholic Church, Seguin Veterans Ministry, Knights of Columbus, Seguin Little League, Boy Scouts of America, Guadalupe County Jail Bible Study Minister and Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister. If he saw a need he could fill he would jump at the opportunity to help. He served as a Little League baseball coach, umpire, and biggest fan for his children and grandchildren.

In August 2006, he began the biggest adventure and fight of his life as he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma cancer. While fighting gallantly against this terrible disease, he asked God to allow his life to be extended so that he could make the Lord, and sharing the Word of the Lord, his priority in life. And that’s exactly what God allowed .

He became a fisher of men as he worked to bring lost souls to Christ. As an experienced fisherman he knew where all the good fishing spots were. So naturally he knew where to go fishing for souls; he took the Word of the Lord to the inmates at the Guadalupe County Jail. He also knew those desperately searching for the Lord, prayer and holy communion were the sick and hurting at GRMC. He was a great example of a Godly father, husband, brother, carpenter, fisherman, and Child of God.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Clarence and Shirley Manly and sister; Judith Manly. He is survived by his wife of 42 years Maria Manly, brother Kenneth Manly, son David McDonald(Krystal), daughter Marsha Pyle(Seth), son Matthew Manly, grandchildren; Nicolas England, Brandon Manly, Kaleb Pyle, Raygen Pyle, Diego McDonald, Alberto McDonald.

We would like to express our sincere and humble gratitude to Dr. David Rider, the doctors and staff of the Cancer Center of South Central Texas, doctors and staff at GRMC and Christus Santa Rosa Hospitals.
