SMJ PIERCE ALVIN HEDRICK, Ret.
On Saturday, October 12, 2013, Pierce Alvin Al Hedrick quietly passed away in the Georgetown Living Alzheimer facility in Georgetown, Texas. Know to all as Al, he was born September 10, 1924 in Spokane, Washington. Al was the oldest child of Pierce A. and Hilda Fay Hedrick. His two brothers and sister preceded him in death.
Al joined the U. S. Navy on September 10, 1941 and served during World War II. Following the war he switched services and enlisted in the U.S. Army . His career in the army lasted until his retirement as a Sergeant Major on March 24, 1970 in San Antonio. He had moved to San Antonio in 1964 and fell in love with Texas and had built a home along side the Guadalupe River in Seguin. During his service he served in the Korean War, where he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart while serving with the 187th Regimental Combat Team Airborne. Following his release from the hospital after being wounded, he was selected for General Ridgeways honor guard for the duration of the war. He was stationed in Germany twice and at numerous other Forts throughout the U.S.
Following his retirement he drove a truck for a couple of years then took on instructing ROTC at Edison High School in San Antonio until his subsequent retirement.
On March 19, 1943, he married the love of his life, Milma Millie Petty in San Francisco, California. During their 64 years of marriage they had two children, Linda F. Riley of Seguin, Texas and James P. Hedrick of Georgetown, Texas. Millie passed away June 2007. . He is survived by both children, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Al loved to play fast pitch softball where he once threw a perfect game in the Southern European Championship Tournament. He loved children, bowling high game 299, fishing, golf one holeinone, gardening and his dogs. Al and his son bowled as partners for several years in the National Bowling Tournament. Al always won their gentlemens bet. Al will be remembered by his friends as someone who always could bring a smile and brighten ones day.
The family would like to thank the staff and management of Georgetown Living for the excellent care, love and kindness they have shown over the past year toward Al.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 21, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Palmer Mortuary located at 1116 North Austin Street, Seguin, Texas. The family requests no flowers. He has supported the Cal Farley Boys Ranch, PO Box 1890, Amarillo, Texas 791059985 for years
